In 1916, the Barrère Ensemble premiered Griffes' woodwind-harp arrangements of The lake at evening and The vale of death, both compositions written for the French-born flutist Georges Barrère. 1919 was the year Griffes wrote his Poem for flute and orchestra, which was premiered at New York's Aeolian Hall by the New York Symphony Orchestra, led by Walter Damrosch, with Barrère as the flute soloist.
